Increasing the taxes on cigarettes has had a positive impact on reducing the amount of new consumers and a slight reduction in current consumers/smokers.
With the growing amount of data collection being used by stores as well as government regulatory agencies and health care providers, there should be some kind of way to leverage this information to increase the tax rate on junk foods which have the highest rate of causing obesity, while simultaneously protecting the individual right to privacy. Lets imagine that McDonald's and Hostess products were consumed 80% more often by those people with heart failure than those without. Couldn't there be a state government based mandate to tax the corporations of these snack foods at a slightly higher rate to offset the cost to the health care industry for those who choose to be unhealthy?
